Cobalt-blue skies, pink sunsets, green sugarcane fields, and the explosion of colors that coat the island’s houses all inspired the happy interiors at SALT of Palmar, an adults-only retreat that captures the true heart of Mauritius.

An existing, Moroccan-inspired structure was transformed to let in light and provide endless views of sea and sky.

There is a real sense of discovery and surprise when you enter this bold world defined by geometry and color. Here, an interior courtyard with a water feature showcasing designer Camille Walala’s art is the most photographed spot in the hotel. A redesigned pool area creates a seamless connection to the beach, while the lobby is more of an anti-lobby, with guests greeted in a meditation space.Taken together, it’s little surprise that SALT of Palmar has been awarded four stars by Forbes Travel Guide.

Interior design Camille Walala

Artist and designer Camille Walala infused the interiors with natural elements and the work of the island’s extraordinary artisans to create a playful, bespoke feel throughout.

Everything has been especially created for the hotel, including woven black-and-white pool, beach, and bar chairs; mosaic tables; cushions; sunbeds; rugs; and more. Guestrooms are on the minimal side, with splashes of color coming from fiery orange-red chairs, striped cushions, turquoise-blue wood furnishings that invoke the Palmar lagoon, and bright woven beach bags. The blue and peach of the terraces echo the hotel’s exterior, bringing the outdoors inside.

Food & Drink Local focus, global allure

Celebrated for its locally sourced cuisine and craft cocktails, the hotel showcases a globally inspired restaurant and three inviting bars.

The cuisine at The Good Kitchen is traditionally prepared and locally rooted—the staff is on a first-name basis with area farmers and fishermen—with vegetarian, vegan, and raw dishes complementing the menu’s fresh seafood offerings and fine meat dishes. The hotel boasts three amazing bars, each with its own menu of craft cocktails designed by Mathew Atkinson, a mixologist from London who wandered the island gathering stories that he transformed into incredible drinks.

Beach Beach bliss

White sand and turquoise-blue water make for a glorious seaside setting, with standup paddling, kayaks, glass-bottom boats, snorkeling, and more connecting one to the beach.

It is hard to imagine a more perfect beach setting than this. Sunrise/sunset yoga, serenity strolls, seaside jogs, and beach soccer take place on bright white sand, while water sports abound for those seeking a saltwater rush. Set on a point, SALT of Palmar actually has two beaches, with one facing the restaurant deck where guests can enjoy cocktails in the sun. The hotel can also organize horseback riding on the beach.
